Jayne Fleener, dean of the College of Education; Mildred Caldwell, principal at Arlington Preparatory Academy; and Diane Spearman, art instructor who pioneered the student tile program at Arlington Preparatory Academy.
The Fuhrmann Foyer was a collaborative project between the LSU College of Education and Arlington. More than 60 hand-made tiles were created by our students to decorate the foyer of Peabody Hall. The project was called "Peering Out" since each student was asked to paint a blue circle and face looking out.
Mrs. Spearman, Arlington's art teacher, said that the art students were involved in every process of the tile-making. The students mixed the liquid clay, poured the molds to make the tiles. They fired each tile, painted them, fired them again, glazed them and then fired them again before they were ready for display.
If you get a chance be sure to visit the wall at Peabody Hall to see Arlington's art students' work.
